Albert H. Merfeld, 90, of Monticello, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014, at Manor Care in Cedar Rapids. Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, at Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello, where a Catholic funeral service will
commence at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Monticello, where the Monticello Drill Team will accord military
honors.
Albert was born March 1, 1923, in Cascade, Iowa, the son of Jacob and Josephine (Besler) Merfeld. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1944 and served in Guam, the Marianas Islands and in China until he was discharged in May 1946. Upon his return he met Wilma Sanford and they were married on Nov. 20, 1946. Together they dairy farmed for a while near Castle Grove, Anamosa and Sand Springs, until settling on their farm north of Monticello.
Albert was a musician who owned several accordians and could play most stringed instruments. In later years he became more fond of listening to music.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Wilma; two children, Linda (Paul) Hostak of Cedar Rapids and Tim Merfeld of Central City; four grandchildren, Russell (Kara Tapken) Merfeld, Jake (Courtney) Merfeld, Brian (Carrie) Meeks and Brandy (Steve) Burge of San Diego, Calif.; six great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Maj Merfeld of New Mexico; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Nick (Marie) Merfeld, Loretta (Earl) Brown, Henry Merfeld, Lester (Liz) Merfeld, Ray Merfeld, Marie (Alvin) Miller and Bertha "Dolly" (John Jr.) Janssen; two infant sisters; and several brothers- and sisters-
in-law.
