Family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 3, at the Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Earlville. Burial: Evergreen Cemetery, Delhi.
George was born Aug. 4, 1919, on his home farm south of Delhi, son of Robert and Cora (Robinson) Shearer. He graduated from Delhi Consolidated High School in 1937. George attended Iowa State University in Ames. Afterward he farmed with his folks. On June 16, 1946, George was united in marriage to Elizabeth F. Ashline at the Manchester United Methodist Church by the Rev. Charles E. Mason. The couple farmed the home farm near Delhi until October 1979, when they retired and moved into Delhi.
In high school George was very active in FFA, being a charter member and the first to receive the Iowa Farmer Degree in 1937. He was also active in Boy Scouts. After marriage, he was involved in community activities, served 12 years as a 4-H leader, four years on the extension youth committee. George served six years on the Farmers Home Administration County committee, 14 years on the Delaware County board of education and 21 years on the Northern Iowa Community College board. George was a lifetime member of the Delhi United Methodist Church, having served on several committees. George was a great promoter of education, especially on the community college level, where a student can afford a chance at a career. Of the original home farm near Delhi, 145 acres was made into a walking park named The Shearer Wildlife Park.
George is survived by two sons, Robert (Kathleen) Shearer of Maquoketa and Steven (Michi) Shearer of Moline, Ill.; one daughter, Susan (James) Wittenberger of Reedsburg, Wis.; six grandchildren, Ben (Sara) of Maquoketa, Ann (James) of Milwaukee, Wis., Eugene of Huston, Texas, Kelsey (Michelle) of Manila, Philippines, Chandi of Des Plaines, Ill., and Leah of Milwaukee, Wis.; and three great-grandchildren, David, Mia and Julia.
George was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Shearer in 2002; and his parents, Robert and Cora Shearer.
