Virgil A. Gooding Sr., 73, a resident of Cedar Rapids, died unexpectedly Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, at Unity Point St. Luke's Hospital Cedar Rapids. The family will greet friends from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, at the Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 6621 C Ave. NE, Cedar Rapids. There will be additional services scheduled at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main St., Davenport. Burial with military honors will be conducted at the National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal.
Virgil served the Cedar Rapids community as a licensed independent social worker, founding his own private practice, Keys to Awareness. He dedicated his life to helping children and teens, making his practice more of a ministry rather than a therapy practice. Virgil was a founding member of AAFPRC. He will be greatly missed by his family and clients.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the family.
Those left to honor his memory include his beloved partner in life, C.J.; and children, Virgil A. Gooding Jr., Davenport, Erica Gooding, Iowa City and Eulone (fiance Diego) Gooding, New York City; grandchildren, Amiah and Andrew Gooding, Davenport; and a sister, Frances Boone, Davenport.
