Two Iowa City Police officers hurt in accidental shooting

IOWA CITY - Two Iowa City police officers were treated and released from the hospital after an accidental shooting Monday night.

According to a news release the officers were cleaning and maintaining their service weapons when one of the officer accidentally fired.

'Over the course of this generally routine maintenance, an Iowa City Police Officer accidentally discharged a service weapon which in turn caused non-life threatening injuries to the officer and another officer who was standing nearby,” the release stated.

The incident happened around 8:30 at the at the Iowa City Police Department substation, on Highway 6 East. The release stated both officers were treated and released for their injuries at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

The names of the officers are being withheld at this time. Police plan to conduct an internal investigation, according to the news release.
