VERNON WINFREY
Cedar Rapids
Vernon L. Winfrey died peacefully on Feb. 21, 2014, at his daughter, Paula's home in Bluff City, Tenn., with his wife at his side.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine Alexa Winfrey; his daughters, K.J. Kein, Paula Winfrey and Pamela Winfrey; his son, Doug Winfrey; and eight grandchildren.
Vernon Winfrey was a man who had many interests. He was a World War II veteran, a hunter and fisherman, a wine maker, a woodworker, a pool player, a printer, a judge of speed skating, a judge for Washington High School's football team, a plumber, a gardener, an eater of whole onions, a designer of beautiful back rooms, a rock hound, a cross country skier, an electrician, a log splitter and he was such a timber and forestry expert, that his nickname was The Timber Lord.
He grad-uated in chemical en-gineering at Iowa State University, belonged to Chi Rho fraternity and worked at Penick and Ford, as well as Cargill, where late in life he was sent to Brazil as a technical advisor.
Above all, he was a great friend, husband and father. We will miss him dearly.
A memorial is planned this summer.
