Kidnapping suspect disrupts initial appearance, escorted out of courtroom
Jul. 15, 2013 2:33 pm
The man accused of kidnapping his 11-year-old daughter Thursday night and prompting an Amber Alert Friday night made his first appearance in Benton County District Court Monday afternoon.
Sean Shannon, 37, was taken into custody Sunday morning in Cedar Rapids. That's also where authorities found his 11-year-old daughter, only an hour or so after the Amber Alert was issued Friday night.
The criminal complaint accused Shannon of taking his daughter without the mother's permission. He's also accused of assaulting a 15-year-old, the girl's half brother, during an altercation.
In court Monday, a magistrate told Shannon a $10,000 cash bond would be set on the third-degree kidnapping charge. The magistrate told Shannon that was a forcible felony with a possible jail term of up to ten years. At that point, Shannon became irate and began swearing in the courtroom, the judge that the charge was "B.S." and yelled a number of other comments.
At that point, Benton County deputies escorted him out of the courtroom and back to jail.
Before the hearing, while Shannon was seated in the courtroom, he uttered a number of comments about the case, calling the charges "basically bogus." His comments in court included saying that his girlfriend was the one who was driving in Cedar Rapids with his daughter, and that the girl's mother knew about the trip. At one point Shannon used the phrase "this is all crap."
A preliminary hearing in the case was set for July 25
