A Cedar Rapids man was sentenced to nine years in federal prison last week for possessing child pornography after a jury found him guilty in March.
James Sumner, 50, was convicted of three counts of possession of child pornography. According to evidence at trial, investigators found child pornography on three CDs and one mini DVD and sexually explicit child anime images on two of the three CDs. The CDs were found in box located in a closet in this daughter's bedroom and the mini DVD was found in a bathroom closet.
Sumner kept some of his items in the daughter's closet, according to trial testimony. He lived in a two bedroom apartment with his two children.
An investigator testified the desktop and laptop computers of Sumner's were missing hard drives when officers searched his residence in June 2011. Sumner told investigators the hard drives crashed or were "fried" and he had thrown them out. Sumner also admitted his knowledge of the investigation before the search was conducted.
Sumner also will serve a 10-year term of supervised release after his prison time, and he must comply with all sex offender registration and public notification requirements.
