Three-hour Cedar Rapids standoff resolved peacefully (W/PHOTOS)

UPDATE: A nearly three-hour long standoff near a Cedar Rapids elementary school ended peacefully Tuesday morning.

Dozens of Cedar Rapids police officers, including K9 officers and members of the department's special response and crisis negotiation teams, responded to 2449 First Ave. SW at 6:59 a.m. Tuesday for an agitated subject. Before long, police had closed First Avenue at Cleveland Street and police vehicles had lined First Avenue. Cleveland Elementary school is in the 2200 block of First Avenue SW.

The standoff ended when police negotiators convinced the suspect, 30-year-old Kyle Peterson, to surrender peacefully at 9:25 a.m. Police said Peterson was taken into custody for a domestic abuse incident that occurred the night before.

Despite the heavy police presence, Cedar Rapids police officer Melissa Henderson said there was "not a lot" to the situation. While initial reports indicated Peterson had wielded a knife during the domestic incident, police did not find any weapons in the home.

"Obviously, it was good that everything ended peacefully," Henderson said. "Due to the location, we wanted to take all precautions."

A man who identified himself as Peterson's father at the home said he and his wife had gone to the residence Tuesday morning to talk with their son. Things spiraled out of control, the man said.

"It just went haywire," he said.

The man said the police were called and quickly responded. He added he was thankful for the peaceful resolution.

"He has problems and he needs to get help," Peterson's mother said.

Cleveland Elementary was on partial lockdown during the incident. Normal operations resumed after the incident was resolved.
