Independence mayor pleads guilty to disorderly conduct
The mayor of Independence has pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct at a bar in his eastern Iowa city.
The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that Carl Scharff made his plea Monday after Buchanan County prosecutors dropped charges of public intoxication, harassment of a public official and interference with official acts.
Judge Kellyann Lekar ordered Scharff to pay a $65 fine, a surcharge, court costs and the bill amassed by his court-appointed attorney.
Prosecutors say Scharff argued with police officers who were investigating a fight at the Majestic Bar & Grill in November. Police Chief Randy Miller says Scharff wasn't directly involved in the fight.
The mayor has refused to comply with calls for his resignation and has apologized for his actions.
