Grandfather, 83, charged after most recent gunfire in Cedar Rapids
An 83-year-old man has been charged with reckless use of a firearm after he fired a gun during an argument Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.
Officials responded to a disturbance with a weapon around 1:06 p.m. at 1526 Sixth Ave. SE. Police said George Stevens and his 30-year-old grandson were arguing when Stevens fired a round from a revolver outside of the residence. Authorities said the bullet struck a tree and no one was hurt.
Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said Stevens told police he decided to retrieve a gun because he wanted everyone to leave the residence. Stevens was charged with reckless use of a firearm, and allowed to sign a promise to appear in court.
It was the fifth report of gunshots in Cedar Rapids this year, after a record year for gunfire in 2012.
