CEDAR RAPIDS - The Marion man who died last week in an accident on Collins Road was the first bicycle fatality of 2018 in Iowa.
Christopher Lewis, 28, rode his bicycle in front of a westbound SUV at Twixt Town Road NE around 6 p.m. Friday. He died Saturday at UnityPoint-St. Luke's Hospital.
Bicycle fatalities are relatively rare in Iowa, with five reported last year, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation.
The five-year average for bicycle fatalities in the state is also five per year.
Services for Lewis, who graduated from Metro High School, will be at 10 a.m. June 2, at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, 4420 Center Point Rd. NE. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. June 1, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, 4200 First Av. NE.
Lewis worked for the Salvation Army and 'cared for those in need and always wanted to help,” according to his obituary. He recently kicked in a door to save a neighbor during an apartment fire, his obituary said.
Updated, May 16: An earlier version of this story misstated the dates of memorial services for Christopher Lewis.
