Iowa City police investigate after man shot in groin

IOWA CITY - Police investigating how a man got shot in the groin said Wednesday evening they had located the driver who dropped the injured man off at the hospital.

The injured man, who arrived at Mercy Medical Center in Iowa City about 4 a.m. Tuesday, said he was approached by a man who pointed a handgun at him, according to Iowa City police. As the man tried to push the gun away, it discharged, striking him in the groin. He said a passer-by took him to the hospital.

The injured man did not provide information about the location of the incident, but he described his assailant as a 'heavyset” male about 5-foot-4 who was wearing a black face mask and black-hooded sweatshirt.

Iowa City police said they were interested in speaking to the driver who had transported the man to the hospital, and had publicized photos of the car in asking for the public's help.

Wednesday evening, police said they had located the car and driver but released no additional information.
