Two dead, one injured in Highway 1 crash near Solon

A fatal crash in Johnson County near Solon killed two people and severely injured a third Thursday night.
According to a report from the Iowa State Patrol, Tori Sabin Smith, 30, of Mediapolis, was driving a 2013 Dodge Caravan southbound on Highway 1, just south of 210 Street NE, when the minivan crossed the centerline and struck a 2017 Kia Sportage, driven by Kirk Flom, 50, of Solon, head on around 8:30 p.m. Thursday.
A third person, Jose Gamez Avila, 20, of Wapello, was also involved in the crash, though officials did not identify the vehicle he was traveling in.
Smith and Flom were pronounced dead by the Johnson County Medical Examiner's Office. Avila was airlifted to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for treatment. Officials said he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Smith and Flom both were wearing seat belts, according to the crash report.
Multiple agencies reported to the scene, including the Johnson County Sheriff's Office, Iowa City Police, Solon Fire and Rescue, Johnson County Medical Examiner's Office, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Aircare, Linn County Sheriff's Office and Mount Vernon Police.
