Flood update: Edgewood Road reduced to one lane between Ellis and Glass Roads

The rising Cedar River has affected another road in Cedar Rapids.

According to a city media release, Edgewood Road NW will be reduced to one lane between Ellis and Glass Roads for traffic traveling south on Edgewood. The city said the closure is being made for safety measures related to high river levels.

The release noted that Highway 100 is open west of Edgewood Road to Covington Road NW. Crews will continue to monitor river levels near Edgewood Road.

According to the release, despite being heavy, today's rainfall will not significantly impact river volume.

However, rain events during high river stages require city crews to pump rain water back into the river, according to the release, as the City's storm sewer system has been closed to prevent river water from backing up. City staff has attempted to plan ahead by proactively staging pumps in anticipation of a rain event, and pumping will occur as needed to any low-lying areas where rain water is pooling. The city is asking residents to heed road closure barricades and to avoid driving through standing water.
