Motorcyclist hospitalized after rear ending truck on highway 13

A motorcyclist was taken to the hospital with potentially serious injuries after a crash with a truck early Tuesday morning.

The crash took place on highway 13, just north of Mount Vernon Road, around 7:30 a.m., according to a media release from the Linn County Sheriff's Office.

A motorcycle driven by Daren Cook, 29, of Iowa City crashed into the back of a mid-size truck driven by Jason Blakeman, 38, of Bernard, while the truck was slowing to stop for a red light.

Cook was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, according to the release. He was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals. He was issued a citation for following too close.

The Linn County Sheriff's Office and Linn County Rescue 57 were assisted by the West Bertram Fire Department and Area Ambulance Service.
