The Marion Police Department has issued a public notice that residents are being tricked with the department's telephone number.
According to a media release, the department has received reports that someone has used the department's phone number (319) 377-1511 in a fraudulent practice called 'spoofing.” In these calls, the victims are told that they will be arrested if they don't come to the department in the next half-hour to deal with an IRS matter.
The Marion Police Department wants the public to know that it 'does not deal with matters concerning the IRS,” and people who receive such calls should disregard the message.
Meanwhile, the spoofing incident remains under investigation, according to the department release.
