Police investigating after fireworks sparked two fires Sunday morning

CEDAR RAPIDS - Fireworks sparked two fires early Sunday morning, one of which caused extensive damage to a garage and vehicle, according to the Cedar Rapids Police Department.

Public Safety spokesperson Greg Buelow said in a release that officers were called at about 4:15 a.m. Sunday to the area of K Avenue and 11th Street NW for a report of juveniles setting off fireworks in the area.

When they arrived, police said officers noticed a small fire near 1201 11th St. NW, and alerted the fire department. The fire, police said was in a garbage a container.

While extinguishing the trash container, police said emergency personnel noticed a second fire burning at 1310 10th St. NW.

Firefighters responded to that area and found a fully-involved fire burning a detached garage and a 2012 Honda Civic. Police said the garage and the vehicle were destroyed, estimating the damage at $30,000.

Other incidents involving fireworks were also reported, police said, including fireworks being thrown on to the front porch of a residence in the area and fireworks hitting the backdoor of another residence.

The police department said officers and the fire investigator investigating.
