Dog dies in Cedar Rapids home fire; resident escapes safely

CEDAR RAPIDS - Firefighters extinguished a house fire in southwest Cedar Rapids that claimed the life of a dog Friday.
The Cedar Rapids Fire Department responded to 4420 Bowling St. SW at noon Friday to find a manufactured home engulfed in flames threatening to spread to neighboring homes. The person who lived in the home escaped, bystanders told firefighters, and neighbors also evacutated nearby homes.
The resident was taken to Mercy Hospital for treatment, but a dog inside the home during the fire died.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
