Early morning fire destroys Johnson County home

JOHNSON COUNTY - There were no injuries in an early morning fire that destroyed a home near the southern edge of Coralville Lake.
According to a news release from the North Liberty Fire Department, firefighters responded at 2:55 a.m. Tuesday to 6 Woodland Heights N.E. for a structure fire.
Bill Schmooke, assistant fire chief with North Liberty's department, said nobody was hurt in the fire.
'There were no injuries to the homeowners,” he said. 'The house is a total loss.”
Upon arrival, firefighters noticed flames and thick smoke showing throughout the building, according to the release.
Mutual aid was called and the home's two occupants safely evacuated the house. Smoke detectors on the main floor of the residence were working at the time of the fire.
North Liberty firefighters were on scene for about eight hours to completely extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Fire crews with Coralville, Hills, Oxford, Solon, Swisher, Tiffin, Riverside and West Branch also responded to the fire and officials with the Johnson County Sheriff's Department, Johnson County Ambulance Service, Johnson County Joint Communication Center, the City of North Liberty Streets Department and MidAmerican Energy also responded to the scene.
