CEDAR RAPIDS - An Illinois man, previously convicted of drugs, was sentenced Tuesday to over three years in federal prison for buying a handgun and more than 100 rounds of ammunition in Marion.
Montarrance Wilson, 27, of Chicago, pleaded guilty in January to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.
According to the plea agreement, Wilson purchased a handgun and more than 100 rounds of ammunition from a Marion man who had pawned the firearm on July 16, 2013. The Marion man retrieved the firearm from the Marion pawnshop and sold it and the ammunition to Wilson for $700.
Later the same day, probation officers made an unannounced home visit to another felon's apartment and Wilson, who was in the apartment, left when officers knocked on the door, according to the plea. Officers found a bag belonging to Wilson that contained the handgun and ammunition inside the apartment.
Wilson was arrested in Illinois on the charges in November 2014. He was prohibited from possessing a firearm because he was convicted in 2007 of delivery of cocaine in Cook County, Ill.
U.S. District Chief Judge Linda Reade also ordered Wilson to serve a three-year term of supervised release following his prison term.
