CEDAR RAPIDS - A Cedar Rapids man has been taken into custody on a warrant charging him with first-degree murder in a Waterloo shooting death in early December.
James Robert Ernst II, 25, was arrested without incident Thursday morning at a home in the 200 block of 15th Street NW. Waterloo investigators worked cooperatively with Cedar Rapids police on the arrest.
Ernst was taken to the Linn County Jail, where the first-degree murder warrant was served.
Ernst is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Orintheo Campbell, according to a release from the Waterloo Police Department. Officers responded to the 500 block of Broadway Street around 1:30 a.m. Dec. 6 for a report of shots fired. A short time later, Campbell arrived at Allen Hospital in a private vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds. He later died at the hospital.
At a vigil held a few days later, family and friends said Campbell was a father of two and brother to many. At that time, police said they had a person of interest, but would not release any other information about the case.
