Former Olin High coach resentenced to probation for sex exploitation

A former Olin High School resource teacher and volleyball coach convicted of sexual exploitation and other charges in 2011 was resentenced earlier this week to five years probation after being granted an appeal.
Jeremy Chamberlin, 34, was convicted by a Jones County jury in April 2011 of sexual exploitation by a school employee, a felony, two misdemeanor counts of lascivious conduct with a minor and three misdemeanor counts of disseminating or exhibiting obscene materials to a minor. He was originally sentenced to five years in prison and 180 days in jail for the six misdemeanor charges.
Sixth Judicial District Judge Sean McPartland on Monday suspended the five-year sentence, giving him five-years probation, and 180 days on each of the other six charges.
On appeal, Chamberlin argued the trial court considered a previous unproven assault charge in the original sentencing.
Chamberlin also claimed in the appeal there was insufficient evidence to establish he was in a position of authority over the victim and insufficient evidence to establish the pictures he text the victim were obscene. The court denied those claims, stating there was substantial evidence to show Chamberlin was in authority over the 16-year-old girl and he text pictures of his genitalia to her, which were sent in the context of “sexually-charged text conversations with the minor.”
Chamberlin also must be listed on the sex offender registry and serve the special sentence of being on parole for 10 years after serving his time because this was a sex crime.
