An Iowa City man is in custody after he allegedly fled from officers for over a mile and, at the conclusion of the pursuit, rammed two Johnson County Sheriff's Office patrol cars at 22nd Avenue and Ninth Street in Coralville.
Clifton A. Carter III, 30, of Iowa City, is charged with eluding, two counts of assault on persons in certain occupations while using or displaying a dangerous weapon and driving while license barred. He is also accused of driven under the influence.
According to a criminal complaint, on Sept. 1, Carter was observed operating a black 2002 Buick Rendezvous with two flat tires. He struck a curb and ran a stop sign.
An officer in a marked patrol car with lights flashing followed Carter in his vehicle but he failed to bring his vehicle to a stop for over one mile. He eventually stopped the car then rammed a patrol car head on and put his vehicle in reverse and accelerated, ramming another patrol car as an officer was exiting the driver's seat.
Carter was taken in to custody.
