2 thrown from motorcycle after hitting passenger car on I-380 in Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS - Two people riding a motorcycle were seriously injured Tuesday night the motorcycle struck a passenger vehicle on Interstate 380 North.

The motorcycle, a 2006 Honda CBR 1000RR, was traveling north just past Wilson Avenue SW when it struck a 2018 Toyota Avalon also driving north. Both the driver, a 26-year-old man, and the passenger, a 22-year-old woman, were thrown from the motorcycle.

The man was taken to UnityPoint Health-St. Luke's Hospital and later transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The woman also was taken to UIHC.

Their identities are being withheld pending notification of family members, police said.

The 43-year-old driver of the Toyota Avalon and a passenger in the vehicle were not injured.

Police said the incident shut down the northbound lanes of I-380 from about 9 p.m. Tuesday, when the wreck occurred, to 1 a.m. Wednesday while police gathered evidence and cleared the scene.

While police were at the scene, a Ford Police Interceptor sport utility vehicle, which was parked on I-380 North near 33rd Avenue SW at 11:10 p.m. with emergency lights and directional lights illuminated, was struck from behind by a 2006 Chevrolet HHR.

Police said the officer who was in the police SUV was taken to a hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released.

The driver of the Chevrolet, identified as Joseph David Weber, 42, of Cedar Rapids, was uninjured.

Weber was arrested on charges of operating while intoxicated, failure to maintain control and failure to change lane upon approach to emergency stationary vehicle.

He was transported to the Linn County Jail.
