Barbara Giblin Roman, 81, of Cedar Rapids, died in peace Monday, March 24, 2014, at West Ridge Care Center, after a short illness, with her family by her side. Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 31, St. Ludmila Catholic Church by the Rev. Dennis Juhl. Burial: St. John Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Teahen Funeral Home and after 9:30 a.m. Monday at the church.
Barbara is survived by her two sons, Joseph Jr. (Gloria) of Cedar Rapids and Jim (Laurie Sexton) of Toddville; two daughters, Linda (Gary) Erenberger of Cedar Rapids and Cindy Driscoll (Dan Ties) of Bertram; grandchildren, Matt (Lisa) Ritchart, Paul Erenberger (Katie), Nicole Ritchart (Jaime Hymer), Shelly (Terry) Schmidt, Shawn Roman (Toby), Whitney Dalziel-Chapman (Seth), Kolin Schmidt, Lily Driscoll and Ryan Polberg; great-grandchildren, Adrianna, Desarae, Alexia, Rylan, Taylem, Sadie, Wesley, Layne, Lucy, Luke, Josh, Tayva, Caysen, Vivienne, Cora and Jude; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joseph Sr. (Jan. 4, 2012); daughter, Laura Hill; son-in-law, Don Hill; two grandchildren, Joey Driscoll and Dillian Hill, two great-grandchildren, infant twins Vanessa and Brocken Poldberg; two brothers, Robert and Jim Giblin; and one sister, Sandy Winterberg.
Barbara Jean was born Sept. 24, 1932, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Emmett and Opal (Boland) Giblin. She graduated from St. Patrick High School in 1951. She married Joseph Roman on July 26, 1954, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Barbara was a loving stay-at-home mother until 1977, when they moved to Decatur, Ill., and she began work at Memorial Hospital for two years. Later, they moved back to Iowa where she worked at Souvenir Inc. for 16 years, retiring in 1995.
Barbara loved to spend time with her grandchildren and hear all about their adventures they had. She enjoyed reading and adored her two cats, Ringo and Princess.
Barbara's family will remember her most for her strength that she had and will be forever their treasure. You never knew what she was going to do next because she was always full of great surprises and never forgot to celebrate her family's birthdays.
Barbara's family would like to extend sincere gratitude to St. Luke's Unity Point Hospice and West Ridge nurses and staff for their care and compassion.
