MARION INDEPENDENT: DENNIS TROUT

I am Dennis Trout, Marion High School graduate of 1966, and I'm seeking my 3rd term on the Marion School Board. I have enjoyed the challenges of serving on the board, and valued the varied, independent opinions of fellow board members. It is a continuing challenge to balance the budget for our school district, particularly with the increasing lack of support from our legislators in Des Moines. I am passionate in my goal that every student leaving the Marion Independent School system receives the best possible education. A solid education can ensure a successful future in many different endeavors, whether seeking employment, furthering in a technical field, or attending college. Not all students are college bound and it is important we give all graduates the needed direction to succeed in an ever-evolving work environment. This includes students with special needs as well, as they also prepare to reach fullest potential in adult life.
Ensuring our students the best education is my number one goal, but supporting athletics and performing arts are an important part of that education. These important tools improve one's broad knowledge of the world around them, enrich their experiences, establish healthy lifestyles, and provide a career path for many students (artists, musicians, performers, athletes).
My second major goal is to control construction and building maintenance costs. I have extensive knowledge in both, stemming from 48 years in the construction field. I have learned to plan and balance costs, decide what is critical and necessary, and what would be nice but not affordable.
Once during an interview with potential new superintendents, I heard 'if you can teach a student to read well, you could teach a student anything”. I whole-heartedly agree that a quality education, based on basic, well-rounded learning principles, sets
up all students for life success in whatever path best suits their aspirations.
Thank you for the support of the last two terms as a Marion school board member. I look forward to the opportunity of serving you again.
