Cedar Rapids District 4: Scott Olson
Scott Olson, Cedar Rapids Council candidate
Oct. 18, 2015 2:19 am
I have been honored to represent the residents of SW/NW Cedar Rapids in District 4 and the entire city as a member of the city council since 2012. As a resident of southwest Cedar Rapids for over 20 years, the progress in the city is impressive but potential for the future remains to be tapped. During my term, I have served on the Development Committee and currently chair the Infrastructure Committee plus serve on the Finance/Administrative Committee. The committee system has been effective in making the council more efficient. I have enjoyed the leadership of Mayor Ron Corbett plus the working relationship exhibited by our current city council members. We may not always agree but respect each other's opinions.
One of my goals in running for city council was to prove you could have an active business profession and find time to serve the city. I feel I have been successful in addressing/managing professional and personal conflicts of interest on issues before the city council and working within the guidelines of the Ethics Commission. My past experience on many city commission/boards; as an architect; and as a commercial realtor have been an asset to the city council. Plus, as a member of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era, I am proud to represent all veterans on the council and serve as liaison to the Veteran's Memorial Commission.
My goals for the next term include:
' Continue efforts to enhance our economic development team plus create a positive environment for existing business to expand plus be competitive in attracting new businesses.
' Continue work on Infrastructure Committee to ensure Paving for Progress expenditures follow what voters approved and we prioritize our street projects to maximize the funds available.
' Work to develop methods and funding to reduce future potential for damage during a flash flood event like the one that occurred in June 2014. Actively participate in the implementation of the flood protection system for both sides of the river plus assist in obtaining the federal funding appropriation to match local/state funds.
' Closely monitor the continuing construction and design of the Highway 100 bypass which will have the greatest impact on the residents of District 4 of any project in the history of the city.
' Continue to support the city manager in his efforts to create the best staff and most efficient city operations in Iowa.
As I travel around the country, it reinforces how fortunate we are to live/work in Cedar Rapids and the great state of Iowa. I am proud to call Cedar Rapids my home. Please vote on Nov. 3.
