I believe that universal preschool for all 4-year-olds in Iowa is a wise investment in our future.
I'm a working dad and a taxpayer. Some citizens are better off than me and some have less. Unless Iowa makes a commitment to provide universal preschool for all our children, the gap between the “haves” and the “have nots” is going to increase. All kids deserve equal access in an education system that is the very best we can provide.
I hope the governor's blueprint for education places a greater emphasis on parental involvement. Our schools need an open-door policy and strategies that motivate and encourage parents to be involved with their students' education. Families should be encouraged to get to know their children's teachers, participate in decision-making related to their own children's goals and opportunities, and have a voice in districtwide policymaking and long-term planning.
I also hope the blueprint will include more accountability that prevents bullying in the school system and addresses the intimidation of families and parents who do speak up in support of their children. It is important for parents and families to be a vital and respected part of the total learning community focused on excellence for all. Further, the blueprint needs to recognize that not all students are going to be college bound and they still need opportunities that will prepare them for jobs that will allow them a full and successful life in a growing global economy.
Other issues important to me personally include matters related to living wage, adequate employment opportunities, health and welfare benefits, and decent and respectable retirement programs. I believe in collective bargaining and am opposed to outsourcing our district jobs. Opportunities created by the school board for employment and labor need to be advertised using qualified bid language, giving higher consideration to local providers and contributing positively to the economy in Cedar Rapids.
In my working experience, I have been successful in supervisory roles and directing the work, planning and execution of major projects and operations. I understand the need for collaboration and teamwork in all of our efforts. I can bring these skills to the school board and contribute to a positive and forward-thinking, action-oriented group process.
I'm your average working person, taxpayer and dad but I am passionate about excellence in our education system. I want what every parent wants: a better life and more opportunities for our kids.
I will value the trust and confidence you are placing with me, always be available to listen to your concerns and input, and be a role model for the lifelong learner.
