Iowa men's basketball vs. Michigan: Final score, stats, highlights

No. 25 Iowa earned a signature win Friday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, upsetting No. 5 Michigan 74-59.

The Hawkeyes are now 17-5 overall and 6-5 in the Big Ten. The Wolverines slipped to 20-2 overall, 9-2 in conference play.

MVP: After a quiet week against Michigan State and Minnesota, freshman Joe Wieskamp showed his potential against the Wolverines. He poured in 16 points on 6-for-10 shooting and added seven rebounds and two assists. Maybe most importantly, he wasn't benched for long stretches because of defense. Wieskamp racked up five steals while playing 33 minutes.

Turning point: A foul-prone game early turned into an offensive showcase for Iowa, which became the first Big Ten team to score at least 70 points against Michigan this season. The Hawkeyes went on a 21-2 run from the 9:08 to 5:47 mark of the first half. Wieskamp scored nine points in that run, including a layup off a steal, a dunk and a three-point play. Nicholas Baer's transition 3 from NBA range forced a Michigan timeout. After trailing 42-29 at halftime, Michigan got within 54-49 with 9:43 to go, but the Hawkeyes defended well enough to seal its biggest win of the season.

Key stat: 24-3. The Hawkeyes got 24 points from reserves to just three from Michigan, despite the Wolverines being in foul trouble (starting center Jon Teske fouled out). Ryan Kriener led the way with 15 points on 6-for-9 shooting, plus 10 rebounds. Iowa also scored twice as many points in the paint as Michigan (40-20).
