Iowa men's basketball handed No. 12 Maryland its most lopsided loss of the season Friday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, 67-49.
The Hawkeyes improved to 11-5 overall and 2-3 in the Big Ten. The Terrapins — whose previous losses came by seven and four points — are now 13-3, 3-2.
Box score: Iowa 67, No. 12 Maryland 49
Recap: Joe Wieskamp bounces back, Iowa basketball bounces past No. 12 Maryland
Turning point: Both teams got off to a sloppy start and that turned out to be the theme of the evening for Maryland. But Iowa settled in and got a small but loud crowd fired up with a 19-2 run in the middle of the first half to go up 29-17. Stars Joe Wieskamp (18) and Luka Garza (14) combined for 32 points as the Hawkeyes led 38-24 at halftime. Maryland never got within single digits in the second frame.
MVP: Wieskamp was 1 of 10 from 3-point range Tuesday at Nebraska and showed that was an anomaly against the Terrapins. He was 4 of 5 from deep in the first half, including a triple in the final seconds. Wieskamp finished with a career-high 26 points on 9-of-16 shooting, including 5-of-9 from deep, a welcome sign for a short-handed Hawkeyes team. He also contributed 11 rebounds and four steals.
Key stat: 32.7. It was a struggle all night for Maryland on offense. The Terrapins shot just 32.7 percent, including 4 of 22 from 3-point range. Iowa turned it over 18 times, one more than Maryland, but the Hawkeyes knocked down enough shots to pull away.
Stat leaders:
Points — Joe Wieskamp, Iowa (26); Jalen Smith, Maryland (13)
Rebounds — Luka Garza, Iowa (13); Darryl Morsell, Maryland (6)
Assists — Joe Toussaint, Iowa (5); Anthony Cowan, Maryland (3)
Steals — Joe Wieskamp, Iowa (4); Darryl Morsell, Maryland (3)
Blocks — Luka Garza, Iowa (2); Jalen Smith, Maryland (2)
Up next: Iowa visits Northwestern (5-9, 0-4) at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The Wildcats, the only team still seeking their first Big Ten win, host Nebraska on Saturday.
