The Iowa Hawkeyes fell to the Michigan Wolverines in Friday's Big Ten men's basketball opener at Crisler Center in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Final score: No. 4 Michigan (8-1, 1-0) 103, Iowa (6-3, 0-1) 91
» Luka Garza got 44, but Michigan got 103 ... and the win over Iowa
Turning point: After trailing 50-38 at halftime, Iowa stuck around and chipped away, cutting the lead to 78-71 on Joe Toussaint's layup with 7:38 to play. Michigan put point guard Zavier Simpson — who sat the previous eight minutes with foul trouble — back in after the ensuing media timeout and he immediately fired back-to-back passes to big man Austin Davis for two-handed slams to make it 82-71 Wolverines. Iowa never got closer than nine the rest of the way.
MVP: It has to be Luka Garza, even in a losing effort as six Wolverines scored in double figures. The Big Ten's leading scorer put up 44 points on 17-for-32 shooting, the most points for an Iowa player since John Johnson set the all-time record with 49 in a Feb. 24, 1970 game against Northwestern. Garza was 10 of 13 from the free-throw line and also grabbed eight rebounds.
Key stat: 3-15. For all of Garza's superlatives, the outside game wasn't there as Michigan routinely drove the Hawkeyes off the 3-point line. Iowa finished 3 of 15 from deep (Garza himself was 0 for 3) as it was unable to keep pace with Michigan, which was 10 of 24 on 3s.
Up next: Big Ten play continues Monday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena as Iowa hosts Minnesota (4-4, 0-0). It's the Gophers' conference opener.
