Irma Matchett, 87, affectionately known as "Irma," died peacefully in her sleep in the early morning hours of Thursday, Nov. 19, 2015, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A longtime resident of both Ames and Cedar Rapids/Marion, her services will be held on Monday, Nov. 23, at her St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids with a memorial service commemorating her life beginning at 10 a.m. followed by lunch ending at noon. Family members will be on hand at 9:30 a.m. to greet and welcome visitors.
A second service will be held in Ames, Iowa, at Collegiate United Methodist Church with visitation from 2 to 3 p.m., a celebration of her life service from 3 to 4 p.m. followed by refreshments and an opportunity to meet, greet and comfort members of her extended family and friends. She will be laid to rest next to her husband, Dr. Arnett Matchett of Ames, who predeceased her on Oct. 17, 1989.
She is survived by her two sons, Ronald Arnett Matchett (Muhammad Abdullah) of Charlotte, N.C., and Gerald "Jerry" Turner Matchett of Cedar Rapids; her brother, Dr. John Bell Brown of Kernersville, N.C.; her sisters, Margery McManus of Long Island, N.Y., and Maxine Baskerville of Buffalo, N.Y.; along with five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, and one more great-grandchild expected in May.
