Thomas E. Fleckenstein, 80, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2014, at St. Luke's Hospital of cancer. Memorial services: 1 p.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Inurnment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday.
Survivors include two daughters, Marti Nesbitt of Kansas City, Mo., and Chris (David) Puk of Cedar Rapids; three sons, Brad (Katie) of Castle Rock, Colo., Jeff of Littleton, Colo., and Matt (Laura) of Elmhurst, Ill. He also is survived by 14 grandchildren, Jena and Ryan Nesbitt; Sami, A.J., Jessi and Owen Puk; Tug, Tommy, Stephi, Grace, Dani, Noah, Hannah and Emily Fleckenstein; and two great-grandchildren, Hayden and Kayden.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Francis Wells; and a grandson, Zachary Fleckenstein.
Tom was born Aug. 8, 1933, in Cedar Rapids, the son of A.J. and Grace Francis Fleckenstein. He attended the University of Iowa, where he played football, and later graduated from Iowa State University, where he played baseball. He married Marilyn Jensen on Sept. 3, 1955, in Ottumwa. Marilyn passed away in 2009.
Tom was the owner and operator of Charter Coaches for 15 years and most recently did furniture restoration in south Florida.
Tom enjoyed camping on the Mississippi River and skiing in Colorado with family and friends. He also enjoyed all sports, especially watching his grandchildren participate in their sporting events.
He was a member of the Rotary Club and proudly served in the Air Force as a pilot.
Tom was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather whose memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved him.
Memorial donations may be given to UnityPoint Hospice in Tom's name.
