Surviving are three sons, Jim (Kathie) Phillips of Cedar Falls, Bill (Karen) Fliehler of Anamosa, and Jeff (Janet) Fliehler of Anamosa; six grandchildren, Gina, Sara, Jennifer, Brian, Joel and Jordan; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Irma Duncan of Cedar Falls; a brother, Charles (Becky) Otterbeck of Bonita Springs, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; two sisters, Gert McMillan and Gen Weber; and brothers and sisters-in-law.
Irene was born Feb. 20, 1921, in rural Volga City, Iowa. She was the daughter of Charles and Marie (Dillon) Otterbeck. She married Merlyn Blake Phillips in 1943, who was killed in action in World War II. She later married Max E. Fliehler in 1950, and he preceded her in death in 1991.
Mrs. Fliehler graduated from Volga High School in 1939. In her younger years, she earned the title of Yo Yo Champion. She worked for a brief period after high school and became a loving wife and mother. Her hobbies included playing bridge and Yahtzee, painting and collecting antiques. She also enjoyed growing vegetables and flower gardens, fishing (including catching the big one!), helping decorate the house with lights for Christmas and watching the Cubs. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Anamosa since 1950.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
