The Rev. Martin Miller of 252 S. 22nd St., Marion, died Jan. 20, 2014, at his home following a progressive illness at age 80. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home will be in charge of the celebration of life to be held 1 p.m. Feb. 1 at the Chapel of Memories. The family will greet friends before the service at noon. Burial will be at a later date at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, Iowa.
Survivors include his wife, Eva, of 54 years; his sons, John Miller of Clive and Robert Miller of Winterset; his daughters, Kathy Linke (Jon) of Clarinda, Mary Miller (Ron Kopecky) of Leola, S.D., Rose Almquist (Tony) of Davenport, and a twin sister, Irene (Larry) Reid of Wichita, Kan.; and eight grandchildren, Ryan and Renae Linke, Derek and Mason Miller, Nick and Noah Miller, and Alex and Kate Almquist.
Martin was born near Ottumwa, Iowa, on Feb. 26, 1933. He was an aircraft mechanic in the Navy. He served on the aircraft carrier USS Bennington and later was a crewman on a PBY Catalina at a Naval Air Station in Morocco, North Africa.
Martin attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, the University of Dubuque and the Methodist Theo-logical Seminary in Delaware, Ohio.
Martin served for 39 1/2 years as a United Methodist pastor in parishes at Guttenberg (three churches), in Ohio while a student (three churches), and after seminary returned to Iowa to serve St. Peter's in Cedar Rapids, Bertram and Central City, Davenport, Van Horne, Clinton, Clarinda and at Cedar Rapids Kenwood Park.
One of Martin's interests was rebuilding and restoring Volkswagen Beetles. Later after retirement he became involved in radio-controlled planes and was an officer and active member of the Cedar Rapids Skyhawks.
Although declining health slowed him considerably, he never let go of his wonderful sense of humor.
He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Martin's memory.
