McGowan, Doris M.
Doris M. McGowan, 82, a resident of The Meth-Wick Community, died Oct. 29, 2011, following an extended illness. Funeral services will held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel. Burial will take place at the Palo Cemetery.
Surviving are her children, Richard (Joyce) McGowan of Cedar Rapids, Gary McGowan of Minnesota, Thomas (Celia) McGowan of Norfolk, Conn., Christine McGowan of Washington, Iowa, Robert (Catherine) McGowan of Martelle, Michael (Ruth) McGowan of Riverside and Mary (Mary Beth) McGowan of Minneapolis; her brother, Donald (Pauline) Elarton of Martelle; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard; her sister, Donna Cones; and her brother, John Elarton.
Doris was born May 26, 1929, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Warren and Fern (Hills) Elarton. She was united in marriage to Richard McGowan on Dec. 18, 1949, in Cedar Rapids. She, Richard and the family took many memorable fishing vacations to northern Minnesota. Richard preceded her in death in September 1986. She enjoyed archery and wrote a monthly column that was published in a national magazine about the sport. She retired after more than 20 years of service from Rockwell Collins. She was a volunteer chaplain at St. Luke's Hospital for 10 years. She had attended and raised her children as a member of Ellis Park Church of God, and later was a member of the Assemblies of God.
She was a helpful, giving and loving person who helped anyone that needed it. She will forever be remembered for her deep faith in God and her unwavering relationship with Jesus Christ.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Doris' honor may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Eastern Iowa Chapter, 317 Seventh Ave. SE, Suite. 402, Cedar Rapids, IA 52401.
