Jewell, Anita
Anita Jewell, 96, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Edgewood, died at her daughter's residence in Cedar Rapids on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011. Funeral services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, at Hope Lutheran Church in Littleport, with Pastor Randy Kasch officiating. Interment: 1 p.m. at Cass Township Cemetery, Strawberry Point. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Edgewood and after 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the church.
She was born June 17, 1915, in a log house five miles outside of Littleport, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Jane Scheer. Anita rode her horse to school and graduated from Littleport School.
In 1933, Anita was united in marriage to Oliver Jewell. They were married for 72 years before she lost the love of her life. They ran a logging camp in Minnesota and Anita cooked for the men. In 1937, they began farming in the Edgewood/Littleport area. Two children were born to this union: a son, Gene, and a daughter, Karen.
Anita suffered a stroke when she was 32 years of age. She learned to talk and walk again and write left handed, but lived with a right side paralyses all the rest of her life. She never let it get the best of her; she even drove tractor with one arm and a braced leg. Anita was a very courageous woman and an example to all.
Anita will be deeply missed and survived by a son, Gene (Judy) Jewell of Placerville, Calif.; a daughter, Karen (Gary) Farmer of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren, Beckie (Mitch) Steller, Cindy (John) Valentin, Gene Jewell Jr., Stephanie Jewell, Wade (Melissa) Farmer and Amber Welch; 10 great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and extended family.
In addition to her husband, Anita was preceded in death by her parents; and three sisters, Hazel Scheer, Donna Amling and Darleen Thein.
The family wants to extend a great thanks to all her wonderful caregivers; Dr. Hamm and Dr. Pope and their staff for their fantastic medical care; St. Luke's Hospice; Gloria Dei Lutheran pastors; and the runners on Hidden Hollow who stopped to wave every morning. She really looked forward and enjoyed you all.
Memorials may be directed to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Hope Lutheran Church, or St. Luke's Hospice.
