Vincent, Russell L.
Russell L. Vincent, 60, of North Liberty, died Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids of cancer. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Iowa City. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Iowa City. Visitation will be Monday from 3 to 7 p.m. at Lensing's Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Rd., Coralville, where a vigil service will be held at 6:30 p.m.
Russell was born Nov. 3, 1950, in Iowa City, the son of Kenneth Albin and Roberta Ann (West) Vincent. He was raised in West Branch, where he graduated from high school in 1970. Russell was a graduate of the Iowa Police Academy. On June 3, 1981, Russell married Shelia Newkirk in Iowa City.
Russell was a correctional officer at the Iowa Medical Classification Center at Oakdale for 35 years, retiring last year.
Russell enjoyed home improvement projects, woodworking and collecting new tools. He liked to hunt deer and garden, especially growing his roses. His favorite author was Louis L'Amour.
The family extends their appreciation to the caregivers in intensive care and the dialysis unit at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids,
Russell is survived by his wife, Shelia, and their son, Ken, both of North Liberty; his sister, Jane McCartney of North English: sister-in-law, Marilyn Vincent of North Liberty; his aunt, Clara Belle Foster of Bakersfield, Calif.; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Kathleen Schnoebelen, Sherry Ann Hauenstein, Andrew Newkirk, Nora Hartman, Kevin Newkirk and Thalia Sadewasser; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Jack; and brother-in-law, John McCartney.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Mercy Hospital Foundation, Cedar Rapids, for the Dialysis Unit.
