Waters, Melba W.
Melba W. Waters, 85, formerly of Iowa City, died at the Hadlow Hospice Center in Jacksonville, Fla., Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009.
Melba R. Schlichting was born Dec. 11, 1923, in Clinton County, Iowa, the daughter of Claus and Frieda (Siemsen) Schlichting. She was a 1941 graduate of Durant High School, Durant, Iowa, and attended business college in Rock Island, Ill. She was united in marriage to Wayne W. Waters on May 23, 1948, in Iowa City. For over 37 years, she worked for the University of Iowa at the State Hygienic Lab, retiring in 1985. She and her husband, Wayne, moved to Jacksonville, Fla., in 1987 to be near their daughter and her family. Wayne died June 25, 2008. While in Iowa City, Melba was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Her family includes her daughter, Pamela Langfitt and her husband, Murry, of Jacksonville, Fla. Their son, Eric, is a senior in the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla.
The family would like to thank the staff at Clare Bridge for their compassionate care, and Melba's friends and neighbors for their love and support.
At Melba's request, no services will be held; burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Memorial donations can be made in Melba's memory to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida at 4266 Sunbeam Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32257.
