Mattes, Elsie
Elsie Mattes 88, died Sunday, July 25, 2010, at Colonial Manor in Amana. Mass of Christian burial: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Norway, with Father Brian Dellaert officiating. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. today at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Norway. Interment will be in the Main Amana Cemetery, Amana. A memorial fund has been established. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by a daughter, Joan (Hank) Stumpff; and a son, Thomas Mattes (friend Kathy Gordon), all of Amana; two grandchildren, Suzanne (Travis) Stratton of Tiffin, and Kristen (Dan) Schabacker of Cottage Grove, Minn.; and six great-grandchildren, Allison and Austin Schabacker and Cade, Karsyn, Kaylee and Kennedy Stratton.
She is also survived by her sister, Emma Albert of Middle Amana.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her sister, Emily Roemig.
Elsie Oesterle was born July 18, 1922, in Amana, the daughter of Charles and Elise Clemens Oesterle. She attended the Amana Schools and graduated in 1940. She married Joseph Henry Mattes on Oct. 16, 1946, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Iowa City. She owned and operated Sandstone Winery with her husband in Amana. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Norway, the Amana Arts Guild, and the Amana Heritage Society. She enjoyed reading and crocheting.
