Emily Anne Hart, 60, began her new life in heaven Sept. 9, 2014, after a courageous battle with cancer. A funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in West Des Moines, with burial in Resthaven Cemetery.
Emily was born June 24, 1954, in Chicago, to Walter and Eleanor (Witkowski) Hart. She graduated in 1972 from St. Joseph Academy, where she was a member of the Stepperettes drill team. Emily earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Kansas and the University of Iowa. She earned her master's degree in speech pathology and audiology from the University of Iowa in 1991.
Emily served as speech/language pathologist with Grant Wood AEA for 23 years. She was a clinical instructor of masters' candidates for the University of Iowa Speech Pathology Department. Emily loved working with children and made a difference in many children's lives.
She was a member of the American Speech/ Language/Hearing Association and an avid volunteer for the Democratic Party.
Emily is survived by her father, Walter of Des Moines; four siblings: Elizabeth of West Des Moines; Michael and his children, Sarah, Kevin, Katie and Betsy, of West Des Moines and Ankeny; David (Nancy) and their children, John, Laura and Ellen, of Cedar Rapids; and Charles (Kara) and their children, Dylan, Braden and Sophia, of Sand Springs, Okla.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Eleanor Hart.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Democratic National Party or Iowa City Hospice.
The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Taher Abu-Hejleh and staff and the Crestview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in West Branch.
