Delbert DeGroff Usher, 92, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, Oct. 13, 2014, at Sunny View Care Center in Ankeny. Graveside service: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at Spring Grove Cemetery, Covington, Iowa. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion.
Survivors include his daughter, Debra (Robert) Hansell of Ankeny; grandchildren, Leslie (Kyle) Austen of Iowa City and Thomas (Maggie) Hansell of Ankeny; four great-grandchildren, McKenna, Sophia, Josephine and Claire; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a daughter, Marie; his twin sister, Donna (Ed) Mittan; and siblings, Pearl Usher, Alice (Arthur) Swinton, Imogene (Verle) Kruse, Harold (Eleanor) Usher and Paul Usher.
Delbert was born May 6, 1922, the son of Otto and Sylvia (DeGroff) Usher in Chickasaw County. On Aug. 23, 1941, he married Alta Marie Kessler. She died Jan. 4, 1990. Delbert served with the U.S. Army during World War II in North Africa and Burma. He worked at Universal Engineering in Cedar Rapids and Bowe Machine Company in Bettendorf, before retiring.
Delbert was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, boating, family, dogs and card games.
