Albert D. VanGampleare, 90, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2014, at Mercy Hallmar Residential Care, Cedar Rapids. Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at St. Ludmila's Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, conducted by Father Dennis Juhl. Family will greet friends from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, with a vigil at 2 p.m. Additional visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his children, Alberta (Greg) Waite of Marion, Dixie (Rob) Gardner and Bonnie (Randy) Christensen, all of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Brian (Mikaela) McCusker, Sarah (Brian) Day, Gretchen (John) Nehl, Jeff (Jill) Christensen and Kyle (Shawny) Christensen; great-grandchildren, Beatrix Day, Kennedy and Brody Nehl, Connor Christensen and Mya and Hailey Christensen; and sister, Yvonne Price of Brooklyn, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mitzi; a daughter, Camela VanGampleare; and siblings, Helen, Madelyn, John, Evie, Irene, Lorraine, Delbert, Gene and Vernon.
Albert was born May 31, 1924, in Belle Plaine, Iowa, the son of Alphonse and Georgina (Satnat) VanGampleare. On July 25, 1952, he married Mitzi Berger in Belle Plaine. Albert was employed at Quaker Oats and retired in 1984. The couple enjoyed wintering in Texas for 18 years. Mitzi died in April 2014.
Albert was a member of St. Ludmila's Catholic Church, American Legion and the VFW. He was a Westdale Mall walker. Albert was an avid Kernel's fan, attending every home game. He served in the United States Army Air Force during World War II and was able to go on the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., in September 2011.
