JOYCE JURGENSEN HURLEY Monticello Joyce Jurgensen Hurley, 79, passed away Aug. 14, 2014, at Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor, Maine. She loved spending her final years in Bar Harbor and was especially fond of the ocean, flowers and the small-town friendliness she found there. She was born Sept. 30, 1934, in Maquoketa, to Bennie and Naomi (Gurius) Jurgensen and grew up in Monticello. A member of the Monticello High School Class of 1952, she was a cheerleader, in the band and participated in many clubs, including the Future Homemakers of America of which she was an officer. Joyce married Bill Schoon and with him had three children, Mark, Michael and Sandra. Later, she married Floyd Martin Hurley and they had many adventures traveling the country together. She worked as a homemaker, secretary, in real estate and for the Iowa Department of Human Services. Joyce loved reading, bicycling and painting. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Floyd Hurley; a brother, Arthur Jurgensen; an infant brother; and daughter, Sandra Lonas. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Mark Schoon and Melinda Rice-Schoon of Bar Harbor; son, Mike of Cedar Rapids; brother, Robert Jurgensen of Sumner, Iowa; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and the darling companion of her last years, her cat, Lola. Private family services will be held in October in Bar Harbor. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be to two organizations that gave Joyce great joy, the Jesup Memorial Library, 34 Mount Desert St., Bar Harbor, ME 04609; or the SPCA of Hancock County, 141 Bar Harbor Rd. Trenton, ME 04605.
