McGuire, Donald William
Donald William McGuire passed away peacefully on Aug. 19, 2013, in Snohomish, Wash., surrounded by his three daughters, Pat, Lynn and Janet.
He was born in Stanwood, Iowa on July 6, 1927, to Willis and Ethel McGuire, who preceded him in death. For the past two years he has resided in Snohomish, Wash., with his daughter, Lynn, and her family. At the time of his death he was 86 years old.
Don grew up in Stanwood, but resided in Cedar Rapids for over 60 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean; and his brother, Dale.
Don was a World War II veteran, serving in the Navy. In 2010, he was honored to attend a World War II Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., with other veterans. He was proud to serve his country and was grateful for the experience.
He worked at Kings Concrete and owned Butters Construction until his retirement. In later years, Don worked and volunteered at the Elks Club, where he loved being an Elk and associating with all his friends he met. He said that is what kept him alive so long, his friends. He was Elk of the Year from 1989-1990. He was also an active member of the VFW.
Everyone who knew Don loved him; he worked hard his entire life and everyone always said he was the sweetest man. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Survivors include Pat VanderBush (Cliff) of Gallup, N.M., Lynn Matthews (Ernie) of Snohomish, Wash., and Janet McGuire Dewing (Bob) of Alameda, Calif. Grandchildren include Jennifer Hamilton (Brian), Jason Sisco (Audrey), Jared Sisco (Cydney), Hannah Oliver (Sam), Kari West (Mike), Emily VanderBush and Alyssa Yonkoske (Josh). Great-grandchildren include Samantha, Kaitlyn, Lauren and Emma Sisco, Madelyn, Cole and Lily Hamilton, Payton and Madyson West and Hailee and Jaxon Yonkoske. Also Don's brother, Larry McGuire (Arleen), and sister, Shirley McKeel (Bill).
A family memorial service was held Saturday, Aug. 24, in Snohomish, Wash. A memorial will be held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa at a later date in 2014.
