Henry, Dale
Dale Henry, 87, formerly of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully on Aug. 23, 2013, in Shreveport, La.
He is survived by his three children, Daryl (Barbara) Henry of Hot Springs Village, Ark., Dana Henry also of Hot Springs Village, and Brad (Rita) Henry of Iowa City; three grandchildren, Brooke Arp, Drew Henry and Heather Henry-Parker; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene Cooley Henry; his parents, his brother and sister.
Dale was born June 6, 1926, in Garden City, Kan., to Lawrence Gilbert Henry and Jesse Esther Van Meter Henry. He graduated from Newton High School in 1944 and served in the U.S. Navy for the duration of World War II. He graduated from Wichita University and married Arlene Cooley in 1948. He taught and coached high school in Haven, Kan., Conway Springs, Kan., and Rosedale High School in Kansas City before joining McCormick Mathers Publishing of Wichita, Kan., in 1956. He served as regional director for NCCJ in Wichita until moving to Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1967 to work for American College Testing. After retiring from ACT, Dale served as an assistant men's swim coach at the University of Iowa for four years. Dale and Arlene lived in Ocean Springs, Miss., until Arlene's passing in 2002. Dale lived in Haughton, La., until his move to Shreveport.
Throughout his life, Dale was involved with swimming, golf and tennis. His greatest enjoyment in life came in coaching others and spending time with his wife of 53 years.
His inurnment will be at White Chapel Cemetery in Wichita, Kan., at a future date.
