Andrew Eldon Pettit passed away Friday, May 1, 2015, at the Hubbard Care Center in Hubbard, Iowa, where he resided for the past three years, before passing at the age of 92. His family and friends called him Andy. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 9, at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Friends may call on the family from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 8, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Andy was born July 8, 1922, in Marion, Iowa, to Joseph T. and Rhoda Alice "Burkart" Pettit. He married his beloved wife, Hazel Irene Starry, on Feb. 26, 1944. She preceded him in death on April 19, 2009. Also preceding him in death were five brothers, four sisters and one half sister.
His son, Kenneth (Kathy); and daughter, Janet (Terry) Kuda, all of Cedar Rapids survive him. Also surviving are five grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Andy attended Vinton High School and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He also was a life member of the V.F.W. Andy was employed at Wilson Packing House (Farmstead) from 1949 until retirement in 1983. Andrew was a member of Sharon United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids.
His children will miss his love, devotion and inspiration. His grandchildren have fond memories of his fun loving spirit, being part of their lives, cheering them on in whatever they did. Most people will remember Andy's love of dancing with his lovely wife, Hazel, but maybe even more than that, was his loving devotion and dedication to her even to the end by taking care of her in the last years of her life. He certainly is receiving great reward and blessing for his selfless acts.
He was grateful to his granddaughter, Angie, for her loving devotion and care his last years at Hubbard Care Center where she is administrator. Thank you to all who were a part of our father's life.
What a blessing and honor it has been to be a part of our dad's life journey. We thank all of you who shared that journey with us. "Til we meet again."
