Creighton G. "Red" Holland, 91, died Thursday, March 12, 2015, at the Keystone Nursing Care Center following a long illness. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday, March 16, at Oak Hill Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Jennings-Bradshaw Post 39 of Belle Plaine and the Iowa Honor Guard. The Rev. Charles Johnson will preside. There will be no visitation, but there will be a gathering at the Legion following the service.
Red was born Feb. 22, 1924, in Norway, Iowa, to Arthur and Clara Beyer Holland.
He was a proud World War II veteran, having served in France and Germany, where he was in the Anti-Tank Company, 71st Infantry. He received a Purple Heart, three Bronze Service stars. Good Conduct medal, World War II Victory Ribbon and an AEME Theater Ribbon.
He retired from the railroad after 43 years. He enjoyed sitting outside underneath his "retirement tree." Red belonged to American Legion Post 39. He lived his life to the fullest and enjoyed telling his jokes to all.
He is survived by one son, Terry (Colleen) Holland of Watkins; three daughters, Pam (Dave) Baker, Amy Holland and Jeanne (Art) Thompson, all of Belle Plaine; a brother, Harold Holland of California; and a sister, Geraldine (Ivan) Smith of Florida. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, Nick Baker, Brittney Baker, Matt Holland, Charles DeCoster, Jeremy Holland, Melissa Johnson, Jessica Holland, Kelly Holland, Brian Holland, Emily Holland, Heath Thompson and Haley Thompson; and many stepgrandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey; two sons, Leo DeCoster and Greg Holland; his parents; five brothers, Cyril, Leon, Arthur, Blaine and Richard; and two sisters, Marjorie and Evelyn.
Hrabak Funeral Home, Belle Plaine, is serving the family.
