Francis William Helm, 96, passed away at St Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, on Monday, June 30, 2014.
He was born in Iowa City on Dec. 15, 1917, to Carl and Miriam (Conant) Helm, attended local schools and the University of Iowa. He served as a U.S. Army data communications officer from 1942 to 1945, and met his Army buddy's sister, Clara Ann Wilson. They were married Aug. 25, 1946, at McLeansboro, Ill., moved to Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, then Prairieburg, where he was employed at Collins Radio and United Fire and Casualty, retiring to Robins in 1983.
Francis is survived by his loving wife, Clara; children, Arthur of Alburnett, Beverly Hollett of Alburnett, and David (Susan) of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; and brothers, Walter and Morris Helm of Iowa City.
Brothers Theodore and Dean preceded him in death.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at First United Methodist Church, Central City, by Pastor Josh Hansen, followed by military rites at Mount Clark Cemetery.
