Robert "Bob" Lowell
Mason, 63, of Fairfax, died Saturday, July 5, 2014, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, after a brief illness. He leaves behind many friends and family members who will miss him. Service: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 9, at Cedar Rapids Family Church, conducted by Pastor Daniel Winn. Family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Burial: 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Hill Cemetery,
rural Toledo.
Survivors include his wife, Gloria Mason of Fairfax; children, Harold Mason of Mesquite, Texas, Kevin (Lori) Short of Oklahoma City, Okla., Michael (Kara) Short of Rochester, Minn., and Kristy (OJ) Moreno of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren, Matthew "Matt," Joseph "Joe," Zach, Layne, Jace and Addison; siblings, Donna (Bill) Smaha of Mesa, Ariz.,
Marilyn Falconer of Walker, Ken (Emily) Mason of Alma, Mich., and Gayla (Gregg) Logan of Pleasant Hill; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dennis Mason; and son, Rob Short.
Bob was born Sept. 15, 1950, in Marshalltown, Iowa, the son of Harold Robert and Alice Ruth (Cloud) Mason. Bob and Gloria Delbridge-Short married on May 27, 2000, in Cedar Rapids.
Bob received his master's degree from the University of Iowa in the field of counseling. He retired from the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in April 2013, where he worked as a treatment counselor. Bob was a certified addiction counselor who worked in numerous venues within the counseling field for the last 20 years.
Since his retirement, Bob enjoyed volunteering at the Drop-Inn store which is affiliated with his church. He was a member of AA and was one of the co-founders for the Gratitude Club. Bob enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, sports and the fellowship of his church family. He was an avid Hawkeye and St. Louis Cardinals fan.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Salvation Army, American Heart Association, or people may also contribute to the AA organization.
